Hello all and welcome to this weeks Dev Diary! Today I would like to talk about the status of the Asset Creation Video, as that is all I have been tinkering with this whole week. Without further ado >

Status Update

Despite After Effects crashing and losing my progress several times due to that, the "Announcement Bar" -overlay has come up quite nicely thus far, considering that I'm once again in unknown waters with how to achieve my graphical goals. For those who are having problems with the After Effects CC 2019, the crashing frequency dropped significantly for me when I did the following;

  1. Launch After Effects
  2. Immediately after launching the software, press and hold Alt+Ctrl+Shift (Opt+Cmd+Shift on MAC)
  3. When prompted, let the program delete the preference files.

Strange though, as the slow previews and crashing was happening right after installing the software, which means that the settings should have been the default ones from the beginning. Only things I changed was the cache drive and GPU rendering settings. After I cleared the preference files and did the same settings again though, the program works somewhat more stable. It also seems like I'm not the only one with these problems, as several other people with newer computers than have had the same problems with slowdowns and crashes on the Adobe After Effects CC 2019.

If you are having similar problems, hopefully this helped.

As I mentioned in the last weeks Dev Diary, I liked the idea of having a 3D look to the Announcement Bar of the video and have had some success towards that end. But first, i started to create a background for the 3D text in 2D, which came up quite nicely, considering it was done mostly by manual texturing and simple layer effects. The problems started, once I learned that the Layer Effects do not work on 3D objects, hence the slowdown in the development.

The texture I manage to concoct here was quite good for ice covered with a thin frost layer on top of it. I still intend to try to convert this in an actual floor and see how this looks like with the mirroring effect. This is how it currently looks;

I Still need to figure out what is the best way to do the many layers of effects that are needed for the 3D layer to have all the necessary effects. After several hours of researching the matter, it seems that the effects can be added to the layer simply by using adjustment layers with the floor layer and baking them into a single pre-comp after all the desired effects are added, sometimes requiring an intermediary pre-comp before adding further effects, depending on what you are after.

That's quite much it for this week. Further updates to be expected on next weeks Dev Diary. Thank you for tuning in and I'll see you next week!
