How to actually "go" shareware?

Cliffski - That''s why I want to go with the demo/full version thingy and have one of these regsites host the full version on their servers. They can handle all that stuff. I mean later when I get really good, i''ll probably have my own system and stuff, who knows, maybe my own full merchant account, and order pages and what not, but right now, the lease amount of hassle, so I can see if my game(s) will even sell.

On a side note, I notice how tetris clones were named in that big hasbro BS lawsuit, and yet, i''m seeing tetris clones all over actually being sold (although admittedly I don''t know if they make any money). Some of these games even use the name tetris. So i''m still deciding whether or not I could risk attempting to sell my tetris clone :-)

I might also sell smiley online, so that''s like 3 games right there, with at least two more games coming alon the way (Liberty-X episodes 2 and 3). I know people say quality over quantity however i''m at my highest quality right now and I won''t be making higher quality stuff until the next game, or set of games.
So why not go for quantity ;-)

By the way, you may want to consider having your demo off of the host of your main website. (For example, use Winsite) Its very useful if you have a limited bandwidth. I only have 25megs a day, so I have to worry about that stuff.
Hey thanks heaps for the tip...

Though my web host hasn't complained yet I'm pretty sure it's not within thier policy to allow corperate downloads from their private pages.

Luckily they havn't noticed the 40K downloads I've already had

[[ Edit: "WinSite does not allow direct download links to its archive. If an author creates direct download links to files in this archive, all files and accounts of that author will be removed. " Anyone know somewhere that DOES support direct download links? GD showcase? ]]

The only way you''ll have a reliable fast host for your files is if you pay for it. You should probably look at getafile.com I haven''t been able to find anything cheaper so far.
Actually I have found one place...

Actually according to Winsite''s website once you create an account:

NOTE: Using download links to any of our mirror sites is prohibited! You and any other web site are ONLY authorized to link to the main winsite servers for downloads. From the download page, we will supply the mirror links. I have set it up so direct downloads work. Right click and copy the Download URL below for use in your web page. Mirror links do not show up on the download page until your program ages enough for the mirrors to pick it up (3 days). Violation of this policy will result in your files being removed from the mirror pool. Thank you for your cooperation.

So not sure if that would work (I was just giving it as an example).
Question, i''m looking at feature price webhosting, and they keep saying their "UNIX" hosting accounts, this only means that they''re running unix right? I shouldn''t have any problems even though i''m using win98 right?
