Ask them for references, developers who have worked with them in the past. Talk to those developers, and then ask those developers for any other developers they know who have worked with the company.
And keep it mostly private and in-confidence. This isn''t the kind of information you try to get out of a public forum since some of what you want to know is going to be covered by nifty legal devices like NDA''s (non-disclosure agreements).
