Tips for beginner, please.

I have little programming experience on c and I want try out using network in my multiplayer games. Im using DJGPP. Could someone recommend any good libraries for beginner and tell me where I can find them?

Thanks. There is more problems though. The installiation seems quite confusing. How can I make this "port.mak" -file under Windows. Write manually? What should it contain and in what formation? I''ve added only one library on djgpp before: Allegro and its installiation was a bit easier.
