My web logs show that for roughly every 6 or so people who click the register button on my game and go to the registration website, only 1 of them eventually registers the game. Its $19.95 through Regsoft.com. I was wondering if this was unusually low or about right? Does anyone else have similar stats on the amount who check the games register page in comparison with final sales? Thanks http://www.positech.co.uk

Well maybe it's because your order form is rather complex and confusing? Look at Dexterity's order form: https://dexterity.safeserver.com/secure/order.htm

It's a lot simpler.

Much better! You made it less cluttered and made the text that most people won't need to read small font. Things like alternative payment methods. Most people will pay by credit card, so there's no need to make them read unnecessary text, which was one of the problems of the old form. It's also a lot more organized and straightforward. You should get more people following through now, in my opinion.

Oh and if you want others to compare and contrast the two forms you should show them the old one as well. If you don't have it anymore I still have it open and I can save it to an HTML file if you want.

Your page does not work with Netscape 4.5. Does regsoft require that you have advertisements for their products on your registration page? (that checkbox that you can click for a regsoft CD-Rom)
1 out of 6 is 16% conversion, on average this is quite good. My experience with order conversion rates on links within a game is that it depends entirely on where the link is within the game. I have conversion rates that vary from 1% to 50%, depending on what type of order link it is and where in the game it is located.

Some locations in the game are more likely to result in people clicking out of curiousity to see what happens (such as in help menus), this will result in lower conversion rates, as low as 1% to 2%.

The best conversion rates are for links that appear on special screens that come up in special circumstances, such as when features are disabled after the trial period, or when special marketing messages are given. These can go as high as 50%.

In between are things like order now buttons appearing on the game screen, these can give rates of 20% to 30% or so.

The best way to improve your conversion rates is to first track them, by putting order links in as many different places in your trial version and then track how many clicks come from each link and how many convert to orders. Once you know what percentages your game is getting, then you can test changes to see if it improves.

Cliffski,

I''ve had the same experience... of about 100 in-game clicks on the "order now" button, about 20 or so actually go to the register screen within my site.
