Roadmap for 2020

The year, 2019, was somewhat good and bad for me here on GameDev.net … while I have managed to write some posts, and be especially active during the summer months, I was somewhat too busy in the work nearing the end of the year, that none of the actual plans were finished. I currently have one project and multiple blog posts (yes, they are mostly related to that project) very close to being published … for about 2 months.

Anyways, it is time for big plans for me in 2020 (*Insert random political joke here*).

Engine

I have had multiple blog posts regarding my own game engine, I'm going to continue in trend of showing some techniques (although not all of them are used in the game that runs on this engine, which actually is the main reason why the engine and tool set is being developed). Few of the planned ones are related to: Terrain, Audio, Characters and animations, Game object scripting and Run-time.

As the development progresses, I'm going to show some work in progress locations in the game, instead of Sponza (which I, after so long time years of using it, consider quite boring).

Effect

I found these to be probably the most liked, as they got "promoted" into articles from blog posts. I have 2 planned in near future - which already have fully finished project … yet I've been too lazy on post writing side. For a change, instead of just a video, I'm going to include example executable with those.

Fig. 01: An example of effect in Unity for near future article. Spoiler alert: It is the water.

Games

Some of you also might remember the GROOM (or GRDOOM), a path-traced “minigame”. It was made for a competition here, and I'm considering to participate if any competition comes around. I did enjoy it a LOT. It reminded me of times when I started programming, as I had to write large parts of code from scratch (which is exact opposite what we generally tend to do in work), and it was extremely rewarding.

I enjoyed it a lot more than Ludum Dare competitions, which tend to be somewhat too much in a hurry. While those are also great … the stress is one of the parts, that's probably the least enjoyable part of experience. Although assuming my calendar is free for the weekends when Ludum Dare happens. I will cook something.

This being said, I will lurk around, and occasionally reply to interesting topics or questions.
