So I decided to revive a dead project after spending some time playing Brotato (which was super fun) but just thinking the whole time “I'm pretty sure I could pull this off”.

So the project I chose was originally just me playing around with a twin stick shooter but it's literally perfect for turning into a wave based rogue lite straight off the bat. It's called SkatePunk (for now). I just updated the project to Godot4 and included a little video demoing what it already does just below. It already has a lot of the features that I wanted my first vertical slice to have so it's a great starting point.

My goal with this project is to keep the scope limited.

  • I want to have a fun enemy variety
  • a good amount of different weapon upgrades
  • I want to keep the game structure simple. You fight through waves. You unlock new stuff rogue-lite style.
  • I want the visual style to be somewhat striking - will see how that goes. I'm no artist.
  • I want this to actually get released. 1 year timeline ideally.

I'm hoping to be posting a dev-blog on a regular basis to keep myself motivated and honest, but also just because I love talking about game design and the programming problems that come along with it.

So yeah, welcome to SkatePunk. First goal: get the wave structure working and get a win and lose condition working.

See you next time
